Journal Champion of Champions returns to Close House

The North-East’s premier scratch-stroke play competition will return to Close House this year. The one day event will take place on Sunday, September 9, 2012.

The event, which invites club champions from Northumberland and Durham counties, as well as 6 others nominated by their respective county and its reigning champion, will take place over the Colt Course at the Heddon on the Wall venue.

This year’s Champions boasts a prize table worth £1,500.

The Colt was officially opened in May 2011 by attached tour professional, Lee Westwood. After putting pen to paper on his deal with Close house last year, Westwood was quick to praise the Champions.

“To invite every club champion in Northumberland and Durham County – plus the elite county players of both counties – to compete against each other is the recipe for a highly memorable tournament.

“I am told the first player to win the Journal Champions – 43 years ago – was Doug McClelland from the South Shields club, who went on to enjoy success on the European Tour.

“That tells you all you need to know about the tradition of the tournament. I’m sure it’s going to be a huge success.”

2011 Champion - Phil Ridden

The Colt hosts the Champions for a second time, with the 6,813 yard course showing it was no push over last year. Many top players found the course tough and the eventual winning score – a level par 71 by City of Newcastle’s Phil Ridden – is yet to be beaten.

Players will quick to praise last year’s tournament. Steve Carr, who represented Backworth Golf Club at last year’s Champions, said: “Last year was a great experience. It was an opportunity to play a course you’ll probably not play again, at its absolute best.

“It’s also great to meet other golfers from around the counties, all of them club champions and county players.”

Last year the Colt proved a tough task for most and looks set to maintain its reputation as a test of golf, even for the very best.

The Champions takes place on: Sunday, September 9, 2012.

Registration begins at 7am – with practice facilities available one hour before tee-times.
